Women made up one of the fastest growing sectors of the workforce, and then the pandemic hit. Kids went virtual and the need to be closer to home caused what is known now as the great she-session. So will the Delta variant cause a second round of that? This morning, I am joined by Elena Armijo, she is the founder of C-Suite Collective and a personal certified coach to talk about what businesses can do to retain their top tier female employees. Elena, thanks so much for joining us.

Elena Armijo

Oh, thank you so much for having me. It’s an honor to be here with you.

Nohelani Graf

So you have three ways that employers can really start to transform their work culture. And I want to dive straight into your first one and that’s support. What does that look like now?

Elena Armijo

Support today looks like more than you’ve ever had. That’s where I point employers first is think about what worked in the past. No longer works. So moving forward, what are the things you can actually give your people more of? One of these things could be a coach. Coaching industry has exploded this year. So if you are still able to provide that for your employees, get them a coach one-to-one support directly through this time is something that most people have not had the luxury of having in the past, but now are able to utilize that to move things forward.

Other ways of support look like therapy as well. There are so many companies that are partnering with mental health professionals to bring therapy into their companies after everything we’ve been through. But last year in eight months, people need more mental health as well. In addition to that, then we have a community. So look, all of our communities were decimated pretty much being at home. And now how do we rebuild them in this new world?

The uncertainty of the pandemic has also raised the bar for a lot of women on what is going to be good enough to draw them away from their family and help split their time. So your second point is balance.

Elena Armijo

Yes, balance my favorite word. But before, you know, we used to hear this myth of work-life balance, which I’ve never really believed in, but I do believe that you can co-create balance from an individual perspective. So look, this means sit down and have a conversation with everyone. One to one. What do you need? So you yourself, you know, I know you have a little one at home. It’s like what would be the perfect day for you and the perfect support structure? Now that as the company I can provide you and help you with. That’s going to be different for every person. So I think we have to get rid of the old school notion of work-life balance looking one way.

Nohelani Graf

Point number three is a big one. Employers have to approach this with compassion.

Elena Armijo

Compassionate leadership, empathy, vulnerability, kindness. This is everybody is scared. Everybody is still scared about what’s coming. And so the best you can do is sit down and say, I’m here. I hear you. Let’s co-create this together. What can I, what can I do to be on your side of the street? It really is about meeting people where they’re at, instead of assuming that you know what they need.

Nohelani Graf

Elena, if employers need further guidance, how can they get in touch with you?

Elena Armijo

Please come to my website, elenaarmijo.com. And we will, my team will connect with you and we will get you started.

Nohelani Graf

I think these are all great tips and hopefully employers are listening as we navigate this new world together, collectively. Elena Armijo, thank you so much.
